Timothée Chalamet Criticized for Disrespecting Ballet and Opera

The star of Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet, has ignited a firestorm of controversy online. The actor’s disparaging comments toward the opera and ballet communities have drawn sharp criticism from social media users and industry professionals alike.

During a sit-down with Matthew McConaughey for CNN, Chalamet discussed his deep appreciation for his film career, noting that he has no desire to transition into the worlds of theater, ballet, or opera.

“I don’t want to be in a ballet, or an opera, or any of those places where they’re barely scraping by and where nobody really cares. With all due respect to ballet and opera,” Chalamet remarked with a laugh.

A wide array of international performers and artists labeled Chalamet’s statements as “disheartening” and “disrespectful.” In a cheeky response, the Seattle Opera introduced a promotional code, Tiimothеe, offering discounts for their production of Carmen. Other institutions have extended invitations for free tickets, hoping to reignite the actor’s appreciation for the performing arts. Meanwhile, many fans pointed out the irony of his stance, noting that several women in Chalamet’s own family—including his mother and sister—have professional backgrounds in ballet.

Chalamet recently secured a Golden Globe for his performance in Marty Supreme, along with two Academy Award nominations (including one as a producer). His next major project, Dune: Part Three, is currently slated for release on December 18.
