About this game
S&Box (SBox) is a sandbox from Facepunch Studios and the spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod. The original Garry’s Mod launched in 2006 and became a cult classic, which created demand for a modern successor. Facepunch built S&Box as a more powerful and flexible take on the original. The developers state that S&Box goes beyond Gmod’s capabilities rather than simply updating it to current standards.
S&Box runs on the Source 2 engine with C# integration. That brings modern graphics, realistic physics, and broader creation features including live code hot reload and seamless network synchronization. The platform combines a game client with a full-fledged engine. Players can build their own mini games and ship them on Steam as standalone projects with no royalties to Facepunch.

- Wide variety of community content. S&Box is a platform with hundreds of user created games. You will find everything from shooters and platformers to puzzles and racers. - Powerful creation tools. S&Box provides an impressive toolkit for creators. Valve’s professional Hammer level editor is integrated for building maps of any complexity. For those who do not code there is a visual scripting system called Action Graph that lets you define game logic without programming. Experienced developers can use modern C# and a convenient component system for scripting.
- Cloud asset library. S&Box offers a huge collection of ready models, materials, and sounds stored in the cloud. During development you can drag needed assets from the built-in catalog straight into your scene without lengthy importing or separate downloads. This speeds up creation of new games and levels significantly.

The release happened on April 28, 2026 after several years of open testing. Facepunch keeps developing the platform, with weekly updates that add content, fix bugs, and improve performance.

I started learning gamedev when I got access to s&box, the first thing I’ve ever created was a “NextBot” made by stealing someone’s golfball code, making it invisible, slap a png on top of it, and made it kill you when touched.
5 years and many games later, I’m very lucky to be working on a full commercial game release with an extremely talented team of developers I met along my journey.
I am very optimistic about s&box’s future, to 5 more years!
As of right now its fairly empty and doesnt run exceptionally well, however they are open and transparent about issues and have already shown work towards improving the quality of the game. Is it a 10/10 right now, no. More of a 4/10, its a good start, just let them do their thing and check back in a month or two, but disliking it into oblivion isnt going to help anybody, its $20, not $60 so don’t expect $60 worth of content right off the bat. I can see the vision, it will be a 10/10, its just gonna take some time.
The day has finally come!
S&box is pretty awesome out the box thanks to the dev preview, there are a ton of quality featured games and fun little experiments to check out day one. But it has already inherited some of Roblox/UEFN’s awful traits such as egregious retention farming tactics (I. E bonuses tied to long play sessions, daily login rewards) and shallow AI generated clickers designed solely to game the payout system.
The in-game reviews do a great job of allowing you to vet a game based on a small glance, but the discover page can remain saturated with the aforementioned slop so I hope Facepunch can tweak such practices out of the platform soon after the floodgates open to encourage quality passion-driven game development, unlike its corporate alternatives.
Rome wasn’t built in a day, this game wasn’t meant to be huge at launch. Everyone complains about the issues this game has and the rather embarassing playercount at launch but refuse to realize how impressive the potential is for this game.
Now that this game has finally launched, developers can actually start becoming more serious with making games which in turn will attract more players. This happened with Roblox, they didn’t start with millions of active players.
The game launched underwelmingly and gradually grew as more higher quality games were being made and more updates to the engine/game itself started to arise. The same will happen with S&box. Facepunch knows exactly what they are doing and this game will probably be the next big thing especially after it becomes free to play and the game becomes more polished.
I honestly think it is really positive and inspiring that Garry, his ideas, and his great team have been able to grow from a simple Half-Life 2 mod into projects this important. Garry’s Mod was already a game about creativity and community, and s&box is a continuation of that philosophy: giving players and creators the tools to build whatever they imagine.
I respect the people behind it a lot.
