Did you know that it’s James Hetfield’s birthday? The Metallica frontman turns 58 years old on Tuesday (Aug. 3) — just in time for the release of Weezer‘s rocking cover of “Enter Sandman.”
Weezer’s new track is the latest drop from The Metallica Blacklist, a soon-to-be-released compilation of covers honoring the heavy metal band’s 1991 record The Black Album. The Rivers Cuomo-fronted band delivered a rendition that captured much of the original sound of “Enter Sandman,” guitar solo and all, and is accompanied by a spooky video with clips of things like zombie hands sticking out of the ground, ominous hallways and what looks to be the skull-lined Paris catacombs.
The Metallica Blacklist will come alongside a reissue of The Black Album and features 53 unique covers from artists including Phoebe Bridgers, St. Vincent, Cage the Elephant and more. One of the covers of “Nothing Else Matters,” released in June, is performed by Miley Cyrus, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, WATT, Robert Trujillo and Chad Smith. The full collection is due for release Sept. 10 and its proceeds will be split between Metallica’s All Within My Hands foundation and more than 50 charities chosen by artists who appear on the record.
In addition to Weezer’s cover, Tomi Owó’s version of “Through the Never” came out Tuesday too. For the most part, her performance is the sonic antithesis to the original version, opting for soft, buoyant vocals instead of Metallica’s characteristic angst — although some hard-core electric guitar does appear toward the end.
