Homeworld is a classic, critically acclaimed series of real-time strategy games. It’s also an extraordinary space opera, one that fans will soon be able to enjoy as a tabletop role-playing game. Today, developer and publisher Modiphius Entertainment (Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, Fallout: The Role-playing Game) opens up pre-orders for its Homeworld: Revelations tabletop RPG. Polygon can also exclusively reveal new details on what fans should expect from the final product later this year.
First published in 1999, Homeworld tells the story of the Kushan, a people lost in space after the destruction of their home planet, Kharak. The action focuses on the Kushan’s miraculous spaceship-building mothership, and their perilous journey to retake their ancient homeworld, Hiigara.
To create Homeworld: Revelations, Modiphius employed Martin Cirulis, one of the original 1999 game’s original writers. They also worked with Gearbox Entertainment and Blackbird Interactive, video game developers that have had a hand in bringing the franchise back to life on PC. The end result is a 300-page, full-color game book that will cover the events of Homeworld, Homeworld 2, Homeworld Cataclysm, and Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak.
“Homeworld: Revelations will give fans of the original Homeworld game the exciting opportunity to view the universe from a new perspective,” Modiphius tells Polygon, “taking on the role of the crew aboard one of the Kushan fleet’s ships. Whether it’s joining the Mothership on its odyssey, or helping re-establish the Hiigaran homeworld, there will be endless adventures.”
The book’s lore will cover many factions from the video games, including the Taiidan, Bentusi, Turanic Raiders, Kadeshi, The Progenitors, and the Galactic Council. The action won’t be limited to hanging out on foot. Players will have rules for taking command of ships of all sizes, from tiny fighters all the way up to the Mothership itself.
No final release date has been given, but Modiphius generally puts out a near-final PDF weeks or months ahead of its physical releases.
