ETS2 Switzerland rework: three routes across the Alps

Euro Truck Simulator 2’s Switzerland rework rebuilt the country’s Alpine roads around three distinct north-to-south routes. SCS Software first described the mountain plan in March 2023, then released the completed free rework with update 1.50 in May 2024. The finished map combines long tunnels, high valleys, glaciers and motorway sections with the practical demands of moving a truck across steep terrain.

The Alps cover more than half of Switzerland, so they are not a scenic edge case in the rework. They shape the main connections between cities and borders. Each corridor gives the player a different balance of motorway speed, confined tunnel driving and open mountain scenery.

Great St Bernard route: Route 27 crosses the western Alps and is defined by the Great St Bernard tunnel.
Gotthard route: the A2 uses the famous Gotthard road-tunnel corridor, with the railway route running through the same mountain system.
Val Mesolcina route: the A13 follows the valley through southeastern Switzerland and provides a different north-south line from the A2.

SCS also highlighted the glacier from which the Rhône originates, placing the player close to one of the landscape features that feeds the river system. Snow-covered peaks, green valleys and water bodies make the approaches visually distinct even before a sign identifies the road.

The early Alps preview mentioned the A9 as a later topic. In the released rework, update 1.50 added new A9 sections and the demanding N19, alongside the A40/E25 connection from Geneva toward Aosta through the Mont Blanc corridor. Geneva, Bern and Zurich were rebuilt as part of the same base-map update, and the Swiss economy gained new depots.

This distinction matters because preview screenshots and text described work in progress. Players looking for the final routes should use version 1.50 or later rather than expecting an additional paid Switzerland package. The rework is included with the base game.

Plan braking before a descent and avoid entering a tight bend too quickly with a heavy trailer. Motorway tunnels can make the route look simple on the map, but the approaches still include gradients, merging traffic and limited room for late lane changes. Secondary Alpine sections reward a lower gear and steadier speed more than repeated hard braking.

For a first tour, compare the A2 and A13 rather than following the same fastest route in both directions. The Gotthard corridor emphasizes major infrastructure; Val Mesolcina offers a different valley alignment. Route 27 provides the western alternative. Outdated map mods can conflict with the rebuilt road sectors, so they should be checked if an old profile shows broken connections after updating.
