Selena Gomez revisits her early musical catalog with a blend of fondness and introspection.
Before carving out her solo path, the 33-year-old singer and actress led the pop-rock outfit Selena Gomez & the Scene, releasing three albums between 2009 and 2012. Today, she’s shining a spotlight on one of those defining songs.
On the August 6 episode of the Therapuss podcast, Gomez revealed to host Jake Shane that her standout track from that chapter is “Who Says,” the lead single from When the Sun Goes Down. The song reached number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 2011.
“There’s nothing more exhilarating than performing that song,” she confessed. “Honestly, the only circumstance that could lure me back on tour would be playing ‘Who Says.’”
Having stepped away from touring since 2016, Gomez laughed that she’d need to lower the key bit by bit to suit her current vocal range. She’s even considering re-recording the track, noting that her original take sounds refreshingly youthful.
“I really want to revisit it,” she said. “A fresh studio cut feels overdue.”
The Rare Beauty founder also reflected on the song’s empowering lyrics, recounting how she once welled up when hearing it on the radio during a trip overseas. “I thought, why am I crying to my own song? But that little girl inside me still needed to hear those words,” she shared.
Elsewhere in their conversation, Gomez revisited her nearly 20-year friendship with Taylor Swift, which blossomed after both experienced breakups with members of the Jonas Brothers.
“Taylor and I like to say that our greatest takeaway from those breakups was each other,” Gomez explained. “We bonded over heartbreak and have supported each other through every high and low for 16 years now.”
Most recently, the Wizards alum teamed up with fiancé Benny Blanco on I Said I Love You First, which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 this past May.
