Respawn Entertainment Announces Star Wars Project

Electronic Arts isn’t holding back when it comes to their rights to Star Wars games. Battlefront released last holiday season to mixed reviews, Amy Hennig’s project at Visceral is still on the way, Galaxy of Heroes was released to mobile success, and The Old Republic is still going strong. Thanks to Respawn Entertainment, another high-profile new project is set to join that list.

Today, Stig Asmussen (game director of God of War III) announced via a blog that the Titanfall studio is now working on a third-person action game set in the Star Wars universe. “Developing a game within the ever-expanding Star Wars universe opens up so many paths for us to go down, and an unparalleled playground to design within,” he says. “We have already planted the seeds by assembling a small, but incredibly talented team, ready for the amazing journey that lies ahead. With this in mind we are looking to expand the dream.”

The blog states that the developer is now hiring for the project, but no release target is given. This news doesn’t appear to impact the development of Titanfall 2, and another blog post by EA’s Patrick Söderlund makes it clear that there is plenty more Star Wars to come from numerous studios.

Even with the sparse details, I’m excited to see what Respawn does with the IP. Their propensity for over-the-top action and high production value should be a good fit for Star Wars, and they’ll likely be shipping in the midst of several planned film releases. We don’t expect to hear anything at E3 considering the newly announced nature of the title, but here’s hoping that there’s at least a whiteboard at Respawn with a bunch of names on it that sound cooler than Dash Rendar.
