If you didn’t already have a reason to pick up a PlayStation 5, Sony has sweetened the offer: For the next year, every PS5 owner will be able to get a six-month trial of Apple TV Plus for free.

This promotion is available exclusively to PS5 owners — it can only be redeemed through the console’s dashboard — and requires a PlayStation Network account and an Apple ID. Note that the Apple ID in question must have a payment method on file, since the Apple TV Plus subscription will automatically be renewed after the trial ends, at the regular monthly rate of $4.99. The offer expires one year from now, on July 22, 2022.

The deal isn’t limited to new customers — existing Apple TV Plus subscribers can take advantage of the deal, too, as long as they’re not subscribed to the service through a bundle offer such as Apple One. The offer is even available to people who are already using Apple TV Plus on a free trial.

All in all, it’s a pretty savvy move on Apple’s part. July 1 marked the end of the company’s strategy since September 2019 of offering a free year of Apple TV Plus to people who bought an Apple product. That means that millions of customers are being billed for the first time starting this month.

Despite boasting critical darlings such as Ted Lasso, Mythic Quest, For All Mankind, and Cartoon Saloon’s Academy Award-nominated film Wolfwalkers, Apple TV Plus touts significantly fewer exclusive shows and movies than competitors such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The logic behind this promotion is pretty clear: Offer the service for as long as you can in order to afford time to produce enough prestige content to attract new subscribers on the strength of that appeal alone.
