Pitchfork is proud to announce that our Assistant Editor Cat Zhang has been chosen as a 2022 ASME Next Award honoree by the American Society of Magazine Editors, as part of the 2022 National Magazine Awards

The organization’s description of the ASME Next award is as follows: “The awards honor outstanding achievement by magazine journalists under the age of 30. Any full-time or freelance writer, photographer, editor, designer or photo editor is eligible for nomination. Five winners are chosen each year based on their talent and skill as demonstrated by their portfolio of work and on their potential to make significant contributions to magazine journalism.”

In 2021, Cat was part of the editorial operations team before being promoted to Assistant Editor. She wrote about Asian American identity as a signifier in music and the endurance of Japanese City Pop, did deep-dives into Kesha’s album Animal and the resurgence of drum’n’bass, and explored the far reaches of music on TikTok, among many other pieces.

The National Magazine Awards were established in 1966 to honor print (and now, digital) publications that “consistently demonstrate superior execution of editorial objectives, innovative techniques, noteworthy journalistic enterprise and imaginative art direction.” The awards are sponsored by ASME in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and are administered by ASME.

Pitchfork previously received National Magazine Award nominations in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. In 2013, Pitchfork won the National Magazine Award for General Excellence in Digital Media.
