The Oscars just lately introduced a new category that was set to premiere on the 91st Academy Awards present on February 24, 2019 for “outstanding achievement in popular film.” Now, the board is “postponing” that awards class, in response to the Hollywood Reporter. ““There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members,” stated Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences CEO Dawn Hudson. “We have made changes to the Oscars over the years—including this year—and we will continue to evolve while also respecting the incredible legacy of the last 90 years.”
In June, the Academy invited Sufjan Stevens, Kendrick Lamar, Questlove, Chuck D, and plenty of others to join the Academy of Motion Pictures & Arts & Sciences’ music department.
