Nintendo: a fortune spent on the design of a new console and new games

Economically speaking, we can say that Nintendo is doing well. Very well even, since the manufacturer made, in 2020-2021, a profit of more than three billion euros, that is to say a completely exploded record. What to do with all this money? Everyone has their own idea. For Big N, a large part of the money collected goes directly to its Research & Development department: a recent financial report thus highlights a budget of 700 million euros for the last fiscal year, an increase of 10% compared to the previous one. And for the current one, which will therefore end in March 2022, the voted budget is … 750 million euros. Always more.

Obviously, one wonders how this money is distributed within R&D, hence the question asked by a shareholder to the CEO of Nintendo, Shuntarô Furukawa. And the latter was precise: the R&D department is focused on several axes, such as the imagination and the development of new games (whose release rate must remain consistent), the development of new digital strategies and, above all, the design of the new generation.

Furukawa San states it clearly: the Switch is in the middle of its life cycle and the machine that will succeed it requires years of anticipation. Also the budget for research and development will continue to increase gradually.

If we are talking here about the next new home console from Nintendo, we recall that increasingly serious and particularly credible rumors also talk about a Switch Pro, equipped with 4K and an OLED screen, which will be released soon. A new version of the popular nomadic machine which, too, had to dip slightly into the R&D budget …
