A new game in the Wipeout series is coming, not to PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5, but to mobile phones. Wipeout Rush, a new take on the futuristic hovercraft racing series, will be released for Android and iOS devices in 2022, developer Rogue Games announced Thursday.
Wipeout Rush will feature “unique card-based racing” and a “new comic book-inspired narrative,” according to the game’s debut trailer and a statement to IGN from Rogue CEO Matt Casamassina. The game’s official website describes Wipeout Rush as a “marriage of merge, idle, and card collection to influence races.” Combined with the hands-off racing shown in the debut trailer, it doesn’t appear that players will be white-knuckle racing at hundreds of kilometers per hour, but rather managing a team and upgrading ships to win races.
Wipeout Rush promises a single-player campaign with 12 championship cups, five racing environments, and a variety of bosses to battle. The game will reportedly run at 60 frames per second on modern mobile devices, will include 60 ships from past Wipeout games, and will feature an original score by Alastair Lindsay, formerly of Psygnosis and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. Lindsay previously worked on Wipeout Pure and Wipeout 2048.
The Wipeout series began in 1995 with Psygnosis’ Wipeout for PC, PlayStation, and Sega Saturn, which spawned nine sequels, spinoffs, and remasters. The most recent original entry was Wipeout 2048 for PlayStation Vita. In 2017, Sony Interactive Entertainment released the Wipeout Omega Collection, which included Wipeout HD, the Wipeout HD Fury expansion, and Wipeout 2048, for PlayStation 4. The collection was later updated to support PlayStation VR.
