The studio behind Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human, Quantic Dream, is moving from androids to droids. It’s developing a new Star Wars game, according to reports from DualShockers and Kotaku. According to both reports, Quantic Dream is already 18 months into development of its unannounced Star Wars project.

Quantic Dream’s rumored Star Wars game is reported to be different from the developer’s previous games. Kotaku, citing an unnamed source familiar with the project, reports that the game will focus less on quicktime event-style mechanics and more on traditional action elements. We’ve reached out to Quantic Dream for comment.

Since releasing the PlayStation 4 exclusive Detroit: Become Human in 2018, Paris-based Quantic Dream has pursued independence, expanding into publishing and founding a new studio in Montreal. Quantic Dream Montreal is headed by Stéphane D’Astous, formerly of Eidos-Montreal and Ubisoft Montreal. Assassin’s Creed game designer Yohan Cazaus briefly served as gameplay director at the new Quantic Dream studio before moving to Electronic Arts’ Motive Studio.

In 2019, Chinese internet company NetEase purchased a minority stake in Quantic Dream, as part of an investment in “the development and creation of the next generation games.” NetEase said at the time that the investment will “support [Quantic Dream]’s vision of becoming a global, multi-franchise entertainment company, and to develop advanced technologies and games for the future.”

Last year, Quantic Dream self-published its most recent games, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human, for Windows PC on Steam. The games were originally published by Sony Computer Entertainment for PlayStation platforms. Quantic Dream has not announced its next project.

In January, Lucasfilm Games proclaimed a “new era” for Star Wars games. “[W]ith Lucasfilm and the galaxy far, far away entering a new and unprecedented phase of creativity, so will the world of Lucasfilm Games — developed in collaboration with the finest studios across the industry,” the company said in an announcement. Since then, Lucasfilm Games and its partners have announced a new title coming from Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and a free-to-play combat arena game called Star Wars: Hunters.
