Lance Bass opened up about how much control Britney Spears has been under in her conservatorship, and how it’s impacted their longtime friendship.
The former *NSYNC member appeared on the Heather Dubrow’s World podcast on Thursday to reflect on his old friend’s situation and how he hasn’t been in contact with her in years because the two pop stars have “been kept away from each other.”
“I definitely believe in the #FreeBritney movement. I believe that she needs to be away from the dad, she needs to pick her own people to run this conservatorship if she even needs one, especially choosing her own lawyer,” Bass said. “I haven’t spoken to her in years. We’ve been kept away from each other for quite a while. But I don’t know exactly what she needs. But I do know that she — to me and what I see — is sane enough to pick her own people.”
During a groundbreaking July 14 hearing in the conservatorship case, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny approved the 39-year-old pop star hiring an attorney of her own choosing, Hollywood power attorney Matthew Rosengart, who is working “aggressively and expeditiously” to remove her father, Jamie Spears, as her conservator. While Bass still remains concerned about the conservatorship system in general and the judge’s rulings, the 42-year-old singer has another main reservation.
“The only thing that I don’t subscribe to is that she’s sending cryptic messages and all that type of stuff. It’s like when the conspiracy theories start, it’s a little much,” he continued. I like to stick with facts. But the main thing that I’m concerned about is court systems and this judge…. It’s scary.”
Fellow *NSYNC alum and Spears’ ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake also showed support to her following her June 23 headline-making court hearing. “After what we saw today, we should all be supporting Britney at this time,” he tweeted that day. “Regardless of our past, good and bad, and no matter how long ago it was… what’s happening to her is just not right.” Other boy band members, including Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean and Nick Carter and Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees, have also called out her conservatorship and publicly joined the #FreeBritney movement.
