Gran Turismo 7 launching this spring

Gran Turismo 7 will launch March 4, 2022, for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Sony announced Thursday. It’ll be the first numbered entry in PlayStation’s driving series in almost nine years.

The launch date announcement came in a trailer filled with long looks at the game’s high-fidelity visuals and new features. Players were given glimpses of a large, apparently open world for driving, dotted with map icons and points of interest where they can pose their autos in GT7’s photo mode.

A large garage serves as the game’s hub world, and it’s where players will store all the vehicles they unlock. Upgrades and customizations galore await players, and the fleet ranges from supercars under the Porsche and Mercedes badges, to classic beaters, to mud-hopping jeeps, and just about anything else in between. More details are available on the PlayStation Blog.

Developed by Polyphony Digital, Gran Turismo 7 was originally expected in 2021; Sony Interactive Studios announced its delay in February, attributing the change to pandemic-related production changes. Gran Turismo 7 is also launching on PlayStation 4.

Thursday’s reveal was also the first look at the new game in more than a year, following a June 2020 showcase where GT7 was used mainly to tease the visual capabilities of the PlayStation 5. The trailer also previewed a new campaign mode for the series, in which players unlock and customize vehicles after winning them in races.

The Gran Turismo series goes back to 1997. Although it’s considered a showpiece for the PlayStation’s technical capabilities, Gran Turismo has never launched alongside a new console. The most recent game in the series, 2017’s Gran Turismo Sport, trailed the PlayStation 4 by four years; Gran Turismo 5 also followed the PlayStation 3 by four years.
