The Foo Fighters are all about the love. That might explain why the group took time before their show at the Azura Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, Kansas to shine a little light on some members of the notorious Westboro Baptist Church.
The Topeka-based extremist group that the Southern Poverty Law Center has called “arguably the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America,” is best known for shouting virulently homophobic slogans during their protests. But on Thursday (August 5), the Foos met that hate with love in the form of their peaceful disco alter egos, the Dee Gees.
“Alright now, ladies and gentlemen, I got something to say. Because you know what? I love you,” said singer Dave Grohl as he and the band — all dressed in white jumpsuits — rolled by on the back of a flatbed truck loaded up with all their equipment for a drive-by run through the Bee Gees’ “You Should Be Dancing.”
“I do! The way I look at it, is that I love everybody,” Grohl said to the Westboro members holding signs that read “God Hates Your Idols” and “God Hates Pride” among other offensive slogans. “Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do? Can’t you just love everybody? Cos I think it’s about love! That’s what I think, we’re all about love. And you shouldn’t be hating, you know what you should be doing? You should be dancing!”
The Foos, who’ve taken on Westboro in the past, recently released the Bee Gees cover EP, Hail Satin.
