What’s that saying about opinions and assholes?
There’s a vocal group of The Witcher followers seemingly disturbed that the upcoming Netflix TV series is being written and directed by a staff together with feminine writers and folks of color, and that reality will by some means make their work untrue to the unique story and lore of the books on which its based mostly.
But present author and runner Lauren Hissrich isn’t having any of these entitled bullshit opinions.
As day one started of the writing course of, opinion-havers took to Twitter to complain on to Hissrich concerning the staff. But she was fast to shoot them down, stating that variety isn’t a problem when artistic writing.
When one other complained about two writers specifically, who between them have expertise on hits corresponding to Daredevil, The Americans, Jessica Jones and The Tick, Hissrich went all in:
“Have these complainers read these writers’ scripts? Have they sat with them and asked about their history with and relationship with the material? Or their favourite short stories, or how they connect with a character? Do they, in any way, know these writers at all?” she responded.
“Because – and I’m not directing this at you, but since you’re the one who brought this up – if these complainers haven’t? Then they know jack shit about how television is made, and aren’t worthy of an opinion about writers they’ve never met.”
Mic drop.

Hissrich has beforehand revealed a list of potential characters for The Witcher TV show, together with Ciri, Rigis and Roach, alongside somebody referred to as Geralt.
Turning the dialog extra optimistic – and thrilling for these wanting ahead to the present – Hissrich additionally went on to debate the writing course of for The Witcher, which is able to to date consist of eight episodes for series one, airing someday round 2020.
First issues first, I welcome the writers. I clarify that we’re greater than a staff. We’re a household. We’re the inspiration for a whole lot of people that will make this television present, and we’re not solely gonna be nice storytellers, we’re gonna be fucking nice human beings alongside the way in which.
— Lauren S. Hissrich (@LHissrich) May 10, 2018
Yes, the writers have learn the books, however these paperwork focus our discussions on day 1. We transfer quick, and I do not bend on the schedule. There are due dates, and we should respect them so that everybody else can do their jobs once we’re performed doing ours. (TV is teamwork, interval).
— Lauren S. Hissrich (@LHissrich) May 10, 2018
We break down characters first: who they’re, what they need, who they will do it with. Organically, these emotional moments collide with plot. Note: some writers are higher at plot machinations. Some are higher at emotional arcs. Some do motion. Some do intercourse. It takes all kinds.
— Lauren S. Hissrich (@LHissrich) May 10, 2018
We determine on one thing. Then we alter it an hour later as a result of we discover one thing else even higher that highlights this character’s journey, or this tremendous cool monster that is simply PERFECT for this episode. We do that all as a room. But TWIST: we write episodes as people.
— Lauren S. Hissrich (@LHissrich) May 10, 2018
From there, it is very similar to I talked about on the pilot section. A author writes, the room reads, we give notes. The author writes once more, we cross it on to producers, they offer notes. The author writes once more, usually working with me individually, to tremendous tune and hone and ideal.
— Lauren S. Hissrich (@LHissrich) May 10, 2018
And that, pals, is how we write.
Bring it on.
— Lauren S. Hissrich (@LHissrich) May 10, 2018
So don’t fear. There will probably be motion. There will probably be intercourse. Roach may get caught on a home, however no matter, Hissrich and her staff appear to be confidently in management and no quantity of moaning from a group, regardless of how small or loud, goes to make a rattling little bit of distinction.
