Exploring Mods in Baldur’s Gate 3

Curious about starting a modded game and wondering what to expect? Whether you’re on console, Mac, or PC, this guide is for you!

Where should I begin?

Enhancing your quest in Baldur’s Gate with some community-made flair awaits!

Although the Baldur’s Gate 3 Toolkit for creating mods is exclusive to PC, numerous player-generated mods are now accessible on console and Mac!

How are mods selected for other platforms?

Only those mods created and uploaded via the Baldur’s Gate 3 Toolkit, having passed internal evaluations, can be made available on console and Mac through the in-game mod browser.

Technical constraints on certain platforms mean that some PC mods might not be accessible on Mac or console. Each mod requested for these platforms undergoes testing to determine compatibility.

Mod creators can suggest re-distributing their mods to console and Mac during the upload. Our Community Team ensures the mod adheres to our modding guidelines, before dispatching mods for internal verification focused on functionality, usability, and stability.

Once approved, the mods are published on these platforms!

Will more mods be available for console and Mac?

Indeed! At present, 69 mods have completed internal testing, with more additions in the pipeline. The process for making mods available on non-PC platforms is continually assessed and may evolve to include further capabilities. Mods validated for both Mac and console will be launched incrementally, so keep an eye on your in-game mod browser to catch new additions.

Note: Not every PC mod will be ported to consoles or Mac. We kindly ask that you avoid extending an existing mod or transferring another creator’s mods to make them accessible via the in-game mod manager.

Respect the efforts of mod creators who dedicate their time and skills to their works, whether uploaded through our Toolkit or external sites.

Using the In-Game Mod Manager

Discovering Mods In-Game

  1. Browse mods through the Mod Manager accessible when starting the game!
  2. Utilize filters on the Browse tab to explore a variety of mods.
  3. Carefully review the mod description. Additional steps may be necessary for proper mod functionality, such as installing an extra mod or tweaking in-game settings.
  4. Click the download button to install a mod, then await its completion.

Managing Your Mods

  1. Access the Installed tab to view your loaded mods.
  2. Enable or disable mods by selecting the box beside each mod.
  3. Be aware that disabling certain mods may impact existing saves, which is important to remember when adding mods!

Syncing Mods

To load a modded savegame or enable multiplayer with mods, ensure compatible versions are installed.

Enter the Verification Window! This tool offers all the necessary details and options to synchronize the mods you have installed with the savegame or multiplayer session you’re joining.

This verification occurs when loading saves from the main menu or joining a multiplayer session via direct connection, through the lobby, or a server.

Support Guide: How to enable Direct Connections.

If the Verification Window appears, you might see several options, which are explained below.

Download
If a mod isn’t installed but is enabled in multiplayer or a savegame, you’ll have the option to download it.
Enable
If a mod isn’t currently enabled, but the multiplayer session has it enabled, you’ll have the option to activate it.
Update
An update will be available if you have an older mod version enabled compared to the multiplayer session.
Downgrade
You’ll be able to downgrade a mod if your version is newer than the one in the multiplayer session.
New Mods
Mods listed as New Mods are ones you have enabled, but aren’t enabled in the session you’re joining.
Third-Party
Mods described as Third-party aren’t available via the in-game browser.

Cross-Saves and Patch 7

With Patch 7 now available for Mac and console, cross-saves are once again operational. If you have PC saves incorporating approved mods, these should function on other platforms, prompting you to download those mods when you access the cross-save.

If you’ve used mods on PC that haven’t been approved for console, cross-saves employing these mods can’t be loaded on the console.

Platform Achievements

Keep in mind that achievements are automatically disabled when using mods—so consider this if you’re aiming to complete your Baldur’s Gate 3 achievements!

Troubleshooting Mods

Downloading and playing with modded files alters game functionality, potentially causing conflicts.

While console mods undergo basic stability checks, they are community creations, and game updates, dependencies, or mod conflicts can affect mod function.

Playing a modded save may result in:

  • Failing to load beyond a certain percentage.
  • Launch crashes.
  • UI issues, such as missing or overlapping menus.
  • Shader issues, like missing textures or makeup.
  • Avatar visibility problems during Character Creation.

If encountering issues with mods, our support team benefits from determining if the trouble lies within the base game or a mod. This understanding aids in providing better official game support. However, we cannot directly resolve community-created mod issues.

Reporting Supported Mods: If a mod breaches our guidelines, report it via the mod listing’s report feature.

Try these suggestions:

  • In your in-game Mod Manager, disable your installed mods. If the problem vanishes, it’s likely related to a mod.
  • If the issue persists without mods, the base game may be the problem; report it to our support using the designated report form.

Note: Using third-party mods on PC means uninstalling and reinstalling won’t eliminate all mod files. Follow guidelines to fully remove third-party mods!
