Camila Cabello, Gloria Estefan, Don Omar, Yotuel, and others have voiced their solidarity with thousands of Cubans who took to the streets over the weekend to protest power outages and food and medicine shortages as COVID-19 cases are on the rise.
The rallies, which ended with several arrests, were in part set off by Cuba’s deteriorating economic situation that was intensified by the pandemic that’s cut off tourism dollars and has left people unable to work because of the COVID-imposed lockdown.
“Hey guys, there is a major crisis right now in Cuba and we need your help to spread awareness,” Cabello explained in a Twitter post on Sunday (July 11). “Deaths from COVID are rising rapidly and because of the lack of medicine, resources, basic necessities and even food many people are dying.”
Shouting “libertad” — or freedom — and calling for an end of the communist regime, the protestors marched through the capital of Havana and other cities in the island.
Over in Miami, Cuban artist Yotuel — who in the past has spoken out against the Cuban government — marched the streets of Little Havana alongside wife Beatriz Luengo. “Let’s support our people in Cuba,” the member of hip-hop group Orishas said on Instagram. “The dictatorship is ending. Cubanos, let’s take the streets. Cubanos, this is ‘patria y vida (country and life),'” which is a direct rebuke to Cuba’s official slogan — country or death.
