Lynne Spears is doing her part to free Britney Spears. In a declaration filed Monday as part of the pop star’s request to remove her dad from the restrictive conservatorship she has been living under for 13 years, Lynne makes her opinion clear.
“It is clear to me that James P. Spears is incapable of putting my daughter’s interests ahead of his own on both a professional and a personal level and that his being and remaining a conservator of my daughter’s estate is not in the best interests of my daughter, the conservatee,” she states in the document obtained by Billboard.
In her declaration, she notes that she became involved in the conservatorship at the end of 2018 and going into 2019, during what she refers to as a “time of crisis.” She states that during this period, ex-husband Jamie “exercised absolutely microscopic control” over their daughter, including her health and finances.
According to her declaration, he hired a doctor who prescribed “entirely inappropriate medicine” to Britney, who did not want the prescription. Lynne adds that this psychiatrist — with “the knowledge and encouragement of Mr. Spears” — “compelled” the star to “enter a health facility she did not want to enter” and was also “threatened with punishment” if she did not stay for treatment, all of which Jamie allegedly approved, as he was paying the expenses.
Because of Jamie’s “complete control” over their child, Lynne says that the father-daughter relationship has been damaged. “Since this conservatorship has been in place, the relationship between the conservatee and Mr. Spears has dwindled to nothing but fear and hatred of Mr. Spears by the conservatee due to Mr. Spears’ behavior,” Lynne states in her declaration. She cites “his coercion,” “mistrust,” “constant threats” and more toward Britney as contributing to the breakdown.
Lynne claims that there was also an incident that cemented how Britney feels about her dad. In the court document, Lynne points to an alleged “physical altercation” between Jamie and her grandsons Sean Preston and Jayden James — Britney’s sons with ex-husband Kevin Federline. Without going into detail, Lynne characterizes the alleged incident as “appalling and inexcusable, and understandably destroyed whatever was left” of the relationship between Britney and her father.
The declaration was part of the court documents filed by Mathew Rosengart, Spears’ new attorney, to remove Jamie from the conservatorship. Co-conservator Jodi Montgomery also made a declaration in the petition urging for the removal of Jamie as conservator.
“In my opinion, Mr. Spears’ removal as Ms. Spears’ Conservator is critical to her emotional health and well-being and in the best interests of the conservatee,” Montgomery, who has been the pop star’s co-conservator since 2018, said in her declaration.
At a June 23 conservatorship hearing, Britney publicly testified for the first time about what she has endured the last decade-plus. In her emotional speech, she compared her “abusive” conservatorship to being sex trafficked, and wanted to see those involved in her conservatorship behind bars — including her father. “My dad and anyone involved in the conservatorship and my management who played two roles and punishing me when I said, ‘No.’ Ma’am, they should be in jail,” she told Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny. “My precious body has worked for my dad for the past f—ing 13 years, trying to be so good and pretty.”
Another hearing is scheduled for Sept. 29.
