About GTA: Dan Hauser on the Reasons for Rejecting a GTA Movie

Amid the recent revival of the discussion on whether a GTA and RDR adaptation is needed, our readers have responded affirmatively — the overwhelming majority of voters believe that such an adaptation should exist.

Voting Results.

However, Rockstar Games once thought differently, declining this idea. Recently, Dan Houser, former vice president of the company and writer of the studio’s main games, explained the reasons for such a decision.

After several awkward meetings, we asked, why should we do this? They responded, “Because you will make a movie.” But from what they proposed, it was clear that they, the filmmakers, would be making the film, and we would have no control, but it would be our creation at risk. They banked on us being blinded by success.

We had a multi-million dollar franchise, and there was absolutely no reason to risk it. In those days, video games were poorly adapted to the big screen. It’s a different time now.

Dan Houser also expressed his readiness to work in Hollywood on something new.
