Baldur’s Gate 3 players on Xbox have been dealing with a major bug that’s causing lost save files, but a fix is expected for next week, according to Larian Studios. The developer posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday to reassure fans that Microsoft’s firmware update should address the save file bug when it’s released on Jan. 16.

“Microsoft have identified the cause of the save bug on Xbox, and will be issuing a firmware update to fix it!” Larian wrote on X. “You’ll be able to update your console manually on the 16th of January, or wait a week longer for the update to roll out globally.” Larian said it hasn’t verified the fix itself, but is “optimistic” that Microsoft’s got it handled. “In the end, all will be well,” Larian CEO and founder Swen Vincke added.

Microsoft and Larian have been working on the save file issue for some time; Baldur’s Gate 3 was released on Xbox Series X on Dec. 7, a surprise release right after the game won a game of the year accolade at The Game Awards. The deleted save file issue started popping up shortly after. The two companies worked quickly to address the problem, issuing several patches and updates — but nothing stopped the major issue. Microsoft even issued some best practices for avoiding the issue, but for some Baldur’s Gate 3 players, the damage was already done.

Players will need to manually update their Xbox Series X console on Jan. 16 to get the firmware update. It’ll get rolled out automatically for all players the week after.

Alongside the notice of the upcoming fix, Larian also issued a Baldur’s Gate 3 hotfix aimed at tackling other bugs and issues. It’s a pretty hefty update, and you can read the notes on Larian’s Steam page.
