In May, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike, and in the summer the actors’ union (SAG-AFTRA) joined it, which had an extremely negative impact on the production of films and TV series – projects were postponed, dates were constantly postponed, and this entailed extra costs. The protesters advocated for increased wages and improved working conditions, against the widespread use of AI, etc. By the end of the month, protests could also affect the gaming industry. On the first day of autumn, members of the organization’s council voted anonymously for opposing dozens of major video game publishers (Take-Two among them) if they do not negotiate with SAG-AFTRA. Their start is scheduled for September 26. If this does not happen, actors may boycott voice acting and filming (motion capture) for games.
In the future, this could have a big impact on video game development – the same delays, delays and costs. How much will it affect GTA 6, it’s hard to say. But judging by what we saw, the acting work may be finished for now. It’s the same with the plot. Taking into account departure of a key author, we can assume that the script for the “six” has already been written. In this case, RDR 3 will be at risk, which, rumored to be the next Rockstar Games project. However, it is still far away – now development in R* is measured in years, almost a decade. The protests will definitely end in the foreseeable future. The only question remains: who will win: the workers of the entertainment industry or the bosses of multi-billion dollar corporations?
