Vol. 76 – Ready or Not Development Briefing

Attention Officers,

Welcome to the 76th edition of our Ready or Not Development Briefing, dated August 2nd, 2024!

This week, we bring you an optimistic reflection from our Game Director, Gruntr, regarding the recent launch of our first DLC, Home Invasion. This message also offers a broad reflection on our experiences as a game development studio.

We are immensely grateful for your feedback and ongoing support as we strive to enhance the game to the best of our abilities.

We are excited about delivering more Ready or Not content and growing together through the journey. On that note, Patch 2 for Home Invasion will be arriving shortly.
Note: These development briefings aim to keep you updated on aspects of our ongoing support for Ready or Not. However, they do not cover everything we are working on at any given moment. Please bear in mind that the content in our development briefings may still be a work in progress and subject to change.

Hey everyone, thank you for reading this dev briefing. I’d like to share some reflections and insights as the Game Director for Ready or Not:

It has been an incredible journey from the early days of RoN’s conception and private alpha, through the unforgettable PVP event during the pandemic, to releasing the game in Early Access to widespread acclaim, and the grand 1.0 launch with significant marketing efforts, including billboards in downtown Los Angeles.

All of this has involved countless hours of learning how to work together as a larger team, fostering a healthy growth pace for the product, the company, and our people. This evolution has allowed us to refine our skills and consistently improve Ready or Not.

While DLC 1 brought numerous quality of life improvements, a player-friendly approach, new content, cosmetics, and more, it was understandably met with some disappointment, mainly due to unintentional system performance issues and restricted access to new DLC maps, among other concerns.

Regarding the DLC maps, the decision not to release the DLC in Commander Mode months ago wasn’t adequately vetted for its impacts, and it has become an invaluable lesson for us.

Nevertheless, we are committed to refining our processes and establishing better communication with our Ready or Not community. Patch 2 will unlock access to the new DLC maps through Commander Mode for those who have completed all 1.0 levels, along with further performance enhancements and bug fixes.

The beginning of this year saw our team gradually reconvene after the intense workload of 2023. We worked exceedingly long hours to release the game at the end of the year, which led to a much-needed recovery period in the first quarter of 2024 to combat burnout.

However, amidst this, we managed to continue working on DLC 1 (and DLC 2) maps, planning future content, overhauling the game’s repository (clearing out seven years of unused content in the editor), addressing a partial leak alert, and transitioning to Unreal 5 to leverage ongoing engine upgrades.

With all this in mind, thank you for your feedback on our latest release—whether positive, negative, or anything in between.

We are driven to keep improving the game that many of you have invested countless hours into, and we have ambitious plans for DLC 2 and beyond. I’m personally excited about what’s coming, and we have some awesome content in store.

Thanks again,

Gruntr
COO/Game Director

Conclusion

As we continue working on fixes and enhancements for the game and enter our next phases of planning, know that we are always thinking of our community and how we can best meet your expectations. We apologize for any shortcomings and endeavor to improve wherever possible.

This concludes our 76th development briefing. Thank you again for joining us, and be sure to tune in next time for more development news!
