Meanwhile, a growing wave of disgruntled fans is demanding that the entire third season be remade from scratch.
The One-Punch Man production committee has officially confirmed that the third season will return for its second cour in 2027. The announcement followed immediately after the conclusion of the season’s first half, accompanied by a new teaser trailer and promotional key art.
However, the news was met with a distinct lack of enthusiasm. Current ratings have already solidified this season’s reputation as one of the most underwhelming anime releases in recent years.
Produced by studio J.C. Staff under the direction of Shinpei Nagai, the third installment has plummeted to record-breaking lows. On IMDb, the season maintains a lackluster 3.6 rating, while audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes has tanked to just 7%. The sixth episode, released on November 16, received a dismal 1.5—the worst score in the history of the franchise and one of the lowest ratings ever recorded for a television broadcast.
Nagai had previously cautioned fans to temper their expectations, noting that the production would not mirror the high bar set by Studio Madhouse in the first season. Instead of softening the blow, these statements only intensified the backlash. Following a surge of criticism and online harassment, the director deleted his social media accounts, stating he was exhausted by the misrepresentation of his words and wished to protect his team.
Fan indignation continues to escalate across the internet. Thousands of posts are circulating with demands to “reshoot the season from zero” and hand the series over to a different studio. Critics have disparagingly labeled the third season a “voiced slideshow,” while the announcement of the second cour was mocked by users claiming the creators “simply renewed their PowerPoint license.” Fans further highlighted a perceived lack of effort, pointing out that the promotional art for the second cour uses the exact same character assets as the initial Season 3 announcement, only mirrored to face one another.
