The third installment of the Avatar franchise maintains its commanding lead at the global box office.
In the short span of less than two weeks since its debut, Avatar: Fire and Ash has amassed a staggering $760.4 million worldwide, solidifying its status as one of the most successful cinematic releases of 2025. Following its December 19 premiere, the film surged to the number two spot for the year’s total earnings after just two weekends, trailing only Zootopia 2, which launched on November 26 and has earned $1.28 billion to date.
Despite this financial success, the threequel’s initial performance has lagged slightly behind its predecessor; The Way of Water surpassed $900 million within the same timeframe. James Cameron has previously acknowledged a shift in the theatrical landscape, noting that in the post-pandemic era, audiences are increasingly drawn to streaming convenience over the traditional cinema outing.
Nevertheless, the director remains confident that Fire and Ash will ultimately prove profitable. The looming question is whether these returns will be sufficient to justify the full-scale production of the fourth and fifth chapters. Currently, these sequels are tentatively scheduled for release on December 21, 2029, and December 19, 2031, respectively.
Although a portion of Avatar 4 was captured during the production of the third film, Cameron has indicated that should the franchise lose momentum, he might pull the plug on further sequels and instead offer fans a public summary of how he intended the grand saga to conclude.
