The cinematic adaptation of the gritty open-world action title Sleeping Dogs is finally gaining momentum as new production details emerge.
Simu Liu, the star of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” has revealed that Timo Tjahjanto is set to direct the film. The Indonesian filmmaker is widely acclaimed for his visceral and meticulously choreographed combat sequences, having recently been linked to high-octane projects like “Nobody 2” and “The Beekeeper 2.”
Liu will take on the lead role of undercover operative Wei Shen. While the production has yet to secure a major studio partner or a definitive release window, the actor confirmed that the screenplay is finished and the project is moving forward at a steady pace.
This isn’t the first attempt to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen. A previous iteration of the project once had martial arts legend Donnie Yen attached to star, though it ultimately languished in development. With Simu Liu now spearheading the effort, the adaptation appears to have found the renewed energy necessary to finally make its way to theaters.
