Nintendo’s sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2022, the company announced during its Nintendo Direct E3 2021 presentation on Tuesday.
Nintendo showed off a new trailer that featured Link exploring an all-new region of Hyrule not seen in the original game: the skies of Hyrule. The trailer also showed new weapons and abilities for Link, including the power to pass through objects.
The follow-up to Breath of the Wild was first announced at E3 2019 and was originally planned as downloadable content for the first game. At the time, Nintendo simply referred to the Switch game as “the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and offered a brief teaser trailer featuring Link and Zelda exploring ancient underground ruins. Although short, the sequel’s announcement trailer was packed with clues that pointed to potential plot points and mysteries.
The original The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was released for Nintendo Switch and Wii U in 2017. The action-adventure game gave the Zelda franchise a vast open world to explore, letting players conquer the world of Hyrule at their own pace and using their own solutions. Breath of the Wild’s open-world systems have inspired players to speedrun and break the game, leading to impressive mastery of Link’s abilities.
