CD Projekt Red never ever considered establishing a development established after Cyberpunk 2077’s numerous ends.
That’s according to the game’s narrative supervisor Igor Sarzyński, that informs PC Gamer that proceeding the game’s major tale would just undervalue the significant endings. “We did consider a couple of other scenarios,” discusses Sarzyński, “but none of them were a continuation of the main game story.”
Phantom Liberty’s placement as a mid-game development came due to the fact that CDPR was material with the base game’s final thoughts. “The endings are written as we wanted them – leaving players with an uneasy feeling, forcing them to think, not providing straight answers,” Sarzyński continues. “They stick with you. No need to water them down. Sometimes less is more.” That approach seems to have paid off, based on the reception to Phantom Liberty and the 2.0 overhaul.
But making a post-game expansion also posed a developmental challenge for the studio. Since Cyberpunk 2077 has a branching storyline with multiple endings, creating a single post-game expansion would essentially make one ending ‘canon’ and negate players’ choices. “The endings are too diverse to have a single post-main story thread make sense for them all,” Sarzyński explains, “and you don’t want to pick one and invalidate other people’s choices.”
While CD Projekt Red didn’t extend the base game’s tale, the group did screw on an extra finishing with the launch of Phantom Liberty. (Spoilers in advance!) “We constantly understood we wished to include a finishing in which V obtains the treatment and endures,” exposes Sarzyński, “but the cost of it had to be huge.” That’s an easy to understand – if ravaging – happy medium, I believe.
Phantom Liberty and the 2.0 upgrade mark completion of Cyberpunk 2077’s troubled roadway to healing. From below on out, the workshop exposed it would certainly be focused on a Cyberpunk sequel, and I’m extremely interested to see exactly how the group adheres to up the initial game’s branching ends.
