Taking the NSFW bear scene in Baldur’s Gate 3 seriously: A lead developer’s explanation of the unexpected choice and personal journey

Baldur’s Gate 3’s efficiency supervisor has actually clarified several of the history behind the RPG’s infamously viral bear smooching scene. 

Before the blockbuster game appeared, programmer Larian Studio was wise to advertise one certain attribute: sex with a druid formed in grizzly bear type. Obviously, the clip went viral throughout the net and possibly offered the game to lots of people that simply desired a thirsty/freaky dream sim. 

The subject of bear-human sexual intercourse expectedly showed up throughout efficiency supervisor Greg Lidstone’s Game Developers Conference talk, where a target market participant inquired about the function of an affection planner throughout those extravagant sex scenes. 

“What happened in my life that led me to this point? There’s a bear in the scene!” Lidstone joking beginnings. “No, we made a very conscious decision.” Lidstone clarifies that numerous games he’s worked with in the past – in the “Wild West” – really did not utilize affection planners for “scenes that can be really kind of difficult” and were “dealing with very sexual topics.”

“We wanted somebody there to sort of keep an eye on this and make sure that the actors felt safe,” he proceeds. “So we had a Zoom call with the intimacy coordinator [Enric Ortuno] and were chatting with him, and he was lovely and we just got a really good sense that he would be there for the actors and that he was confident enough that he would stand up to me if I was making the wrong decisions.”

Lidstone recognizes the difficult power characteristics that include guiding intimate scenes, as well. “As a director,  I’m dealing with an actor and there’s a shift, I tell them what to do and they kind of have to do that,” he states, prior to discussing that an affection planner is required to “level that playing field” while stars are playing off “raw emotions.”

Elsewhere at GDC, Larian Studios revealed that it would not be going back to the globe of D&D for Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC or Baldur’s Gate 4 – though permit owner Wizards of the Coast obviously aren’t at fault for the split
