Sonic Colors is getting an Ultimate remaster this September

Sega is remastering Sonic Colors, the beloved Sonic the Hedgehog game originally released in 2010 for Nintendo DS and Wii, for modern platforms. A remastered version of that game is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One on Sept. 7, under the name Sonic Colors: Ultimate.

Sonic Colors: Ultimate will include upscaled visuals, a new game mode, refined controls, and other upgrades, Sega announced during a presentation Thursday called Sonic Central. The game will be playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X through backward compatibility.

Blind Squirrel Games is developing the remaster. The studio’s previous work includes BioShock: The Collection and Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

Like the original Sonic Colors, the Ultimate re-release sees Sonic the Hedgehog visiting an interstellar amusement park built by Dr. Eggman (aka Robotnik). Eggman’s delightful amusement park has a sinister power source; the bad doctor has captured an alien race known as Wisps to fuel his park, and it’s up to Sonic to free them. The color-coded Wisps each have their own special powers, which they can imbue on Sonic. Using the Wisps’ abilities, Sonic can transform into a fireball, a drill, a hovercraft, a wall-climbing spiked ball, and more as he navigates a colorful 3D world.

Sonic Colors: Ultimate costs $39.99 physically and digitally. A $44.99 Digital Deluxe edition will include bonus cosmetic items, extra game music remixes, and an earlier release date: Sept. 3.

Sega also plans to release a two-part animated series called Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps, which will see the return of Sonic voice actor Roger Craig Smith.
