When you’re a first-time Saturday Night Live musical guest standing next to two comedy geniuses like Keegan-Michael Key and Kate McKinnon in the promo video, the smart move is to just let them do the heavy lifting. That’s the strategy “Good 4 U” singer Olivia Rodrigo, 18, employs in the teasers for this weekend’s (May 15) SNL, in which Key and McKinnon riff on their comedic chops.
“Hi, I’m Keegan-Michael Key, and I’m hosting SNL with Olivia Rodrigo,” the Schmigadoon! star says in the clip. McKinnon then teases, “You gotta watch because Keegan promised the show’s gonna be the best in 46 years.” No pressure, but Key still hedged his bets.
“Well, I didn’t promise. I said it’d be nice if it was,” he responded haltingly, as McKinnon turned up the heat and smacked his chest. “No, you said it. You promised. It’s out there. Good luck.”
In the second promo, McKinnon asked Key if he was planning to bring back any of his beloved MadTV characters and he demurred, saying, “Ah, I kinda want to focus on the new stuff.” McKinnon clarified, though, that she was talking to Rodrigo, Billboard‘s latest cover star.
“Yeah, if the mood strikes me,” she nodded.
