Marvel’s Avengers will soon let you play as multiples of the same hero, permanently

Four Hulks or four Iron Mans are about to be the new normal in Marvel’s Avengers, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics announced last week. The Tachyon Anomaly Event, which allowed Marvel’s Avengers players to play as multiple versions of the same heroes while grouped up, is about to become a permanent feature in the game. The studios revealed an update to the game’s pre-War for Wakanda expansion roadmap, which includes duplicate heroes permanently, the game’s first “Omega Level Threat,” and multiplayer Mega Hives.

In April, Crystal Dynamics hosted the Tachyon Anomaly Event, which allowed players to play as multiples of the same hero in the same party — outside of the event, players are only allowed to have one of each hero in a four-player squad. The event only lasted for two weeks, but created a more flexible group environment. In the game’s July update, the Tachyon Anomaly Event will become a permanent feature, and fans can group with whatever cadre of heroes they like, even if there are two Thors instead of one.

The star of the July update is Marvel’s Avengers first Omega Level Threat, which we believe to be the game’s raid equivalent. The first Omega Level Threat is “Family Reunion,” and the Marvel’s Avengers blog calls it the “toughest content to date.” The mission will feature another fight with the Super-Adaptoid enemy, but it’ll have some new abilities to really test the Avengers.

Players can also jump into Mega Hives with friends starting in July. Mega Hives are one of the game’s more rewarding mission types, causing players to cycle through their playable heroes whenever they die. But the missions are also very long, so having a friend tag along in the new multiplayer version should help the mode feel less lonely.

Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix have also changed the “Additional Content and Features” section of the roadmap to say “In Development,” signifying that they’ll likely come after the War for Wakanda expansion. That section currently includes more Omega Level Threat Missions, Patrol Mode, a Power Level increase, and new War Zones and Assignments in the Wastelands.

This news comes after the game’s June update introduced a nasty bug that displayed PS5 player’s IP addresses on screen while playing, a major safety concern for streamers. The Marvel’s Avengers team eventually patched the problem.

The July update is the game’s last month of updates before the new War for Wakanda expansion launches in August. The expansion will include Black Panther as a playable hero, new story, the Wakanda Jungle Biome, a new Outpost to explore, new missions, new enemies like Klaw, and a host of new cosmetics.

Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix didn’t offer a firm release date for the July update or the War for Wakanda expansion.
