Louis Garrel Joins Sydney Sweeney in ‘The Custom of the Country’

Acclaimed French actor and filmmaker Louis Garrel, perhaps best known for The Dreamers, has joined the ensemble of the upcoming period drama The Custom of the Country. He will star opposite Sydney Sweeney (The Housemaid), who takes the lead in this prestigious costume piece.

The film is an adaptation of the classic novel by Edith Wharton, the literary mind behind The Buccaneers and The Age of Innocence. Set in 1913, the story follows the ambitious and entitled Undine Spragg (Sweeney), a Midwestern girl who relocates to New York with a ruthless determination to conquer the city’s high society.

The project is written and directed by Josie Rourke (Mary Queen of Scots). Joining Garrel and Sweeney in the star-studded cast are Leo Woodall, Dominic West, Martha Plimpton, Josh Finan, Rose Leslie, Miranda Richardson, Matthew Goode, and Irène Jacob.

While an official release date remains unconfirmed, Studiocanal is spearheading the production. Garrel was most recently seen in the drama Maria (released as Couture in some territories) starring Angelina Jolie.
