After a lengthy postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Tony Awards ceremony for the 2019-2020 Broadway season – originally scheduled for June 7, 2020 – will officially return as part of a four-hour event on Sunday, Sept. 26. The American Theatre Wing’s 74th Annual Tony Awards will broadcast live at 7 p.m. ET exclusively on Paramount+, followed by the broadcast of The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back!, a live concert event celebrating the return of Broadway, at 9 p.m. ET on CBS, Paramount+ and the CBS app.
The CBS broadcast will include performances from three plays nominated for best musical (Jagged Little Pill, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical and Moulin Rouge! The Musical) as well as the live presentation of three Tony Awards: best play, best revival of a play and best musical. Other winners at the preceding Tony Awards ceremony will be honored throughout the CBS event that also promises “Tony Award winners re-uniting on stage to perform beloved classics.”
“After this devastating past year and a half for our industry, our city and for the entire world, we are excited to finally be able to celebrate the return of Broadway, our Tony Award nominees and winners in this new and exciting format,” said Charlotte St. Martin, president of The Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, in a joint statement.
Broadway will reopen in September 2021 after an 18-month shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Several Broadway blockbusters (Wicked, The Lion King, Hamilton) will return on Sept. 14, with Hadestown leading the reopening pack with a recently announced return date of Sept. 2.
