An RMC Mike song is a wrestling promo. There’s no goal except to use his hulkish voice to lift himself up with flexes and to hurl stinging insults—that may or may not be based in truth—at whoever he thinks is a punk. In an unhealthy turn of events, I’ve started listening to Mike songs as if they were podcasts, following along with every line as I let the YouTube autoplay function do its thing. His latest single, “Ready or Not,” rewards that type of listening: If you were to sit five people in front of a computer screen and have them pick a favorite line, there’d be no duplicates. Personally, I lean toward “Drop two niggas with one shot that’s an and one.” Maybe someone else would pick any of the various lines where he stirs drama in unspecified small towns just outside Michigan state lines.
