Baby Money – “Fear Money”

Cortex’s “Huit Octobre 1971” is an overused rap sample because of its versatility. Its most well-known interpretations are likely MF DOOM’s “One Beer” and Wiz Khalifa’s “Visions,” and they are still the two that have used it best. But Baby Money’s “Fear Money” is a flip that gives it new life by bringing in the stuttering drum patterns of the Michigan scene. The slick-talking Detroit rapper is all flash and swag, and he’s an expert at making the listener feel broke: “You just touched yo’ first 100, boy that’s kid money.” He does the historic sample justice.

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
