Khalid Premieres ‘New Normal,’ Reveals What He’d Take to Space at Virgin Galactic Launch: Watch

That’s one small step for man, one giant leap Khalid.

On Sunday (July 11), the 23-year-old singer premiered his new song “New Normal” during Virgin Galactic’s spaceflight launch at Spaceport America in New Mexico. Introduced by late-night TV show host Stephen Colbert during a livestream broadcast of Sir Richard Branson’s historic visit to space, Khalid debuted the dreamy song in front of a small crowd at the spaceport, located near Truth and Consequences.

Dressed in a shiny black-and-white jacket and flanked by his backing band, the singer also performed his hit tracks “Better” and “Talk.” After the three-song set, Khalid was interviewed by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, who asked him about the overall experience of performing at the historic space launch.

“It seems surreal. I think that’s kind of how we all feel about the times right now. But it’s true, it’s our new normal. We’re going to have to get used to it, because we’re going to see a lot more to come,” the singer said.

Khalid added that he hopes to get the “confidence” to visit space someday. Hadfield then questioned what the artist would take with him to space if the opportunity presented itself. “One of my best friends gave me a crystal for my birthday,” Khalid answered. “I would take that with me. I really cherish my friends.”

The singer previously stated that “New Normal” is about “these new journeys we are taking after experiencing so much change during the pandemic. The future is now, everything is changing and this new normal we are all living in is proof that we can find our way through hard times.”

The “New Normal” officially drops on July 21 through Right Hand Music Group/RCA Records
