In the midst of nervous red carpet newcomers, a trio of boy band legends — AJ McLean, Lance Bass and Nick Lachey — mingled cooly with the press ahead of the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (Sept 12).
On the carpet, McLean, a member of the Backstreet Boys, revealed to Billboard that “If You Want It to Be Good Girl (Get Yourself a Bad Boy)” was the group’s most “hated” song of their entire catalog. “That’s our least favorite song we’ve ever recorded,” he says. “We we have never sang it live, we will never do it live.”
The track was a deep cut from their 1997 sophomore album, Backstreet’s Back, and reappeared on their following self-titled compilation album, which went on to be RIAA certified 14-times platinum. “But now you know what [the song] means to your fans,” Lachey chimed in.
Responded McLean, “But now we know that it’s toxic for 5-year-olds. I have an almost 5-year-old, I don’t want that for her.” He shares two daughters Lyric Dean and Ava Jaymes with his wife, Rochelle.
The trio — who presented the award for best K-pop to BTS for their chart-topping single “Butter” — also spoke on the lasting impact of boy bands. “They’re never gonna go away,” insisted Lachey, who came to prominence as a member of the platinum-selling group 98 Degrees. “We were lucky enough to be in an era where it was so celebrated and we had the time of our lives. It goes through a cycle and it’s gonna cycle back again. It’ll always be a part of music.”
The Backstreet Boys recently announced via Twitter the postponement of their upcoming holiday album and related holiday-themed Las Vegas residency. “We sadly had to postpone our Christmas residency until next year, because the Christmas album is not done yet. We’re a little leery still about COVID and we want our fans and ourselves to be safe,” added McLean.
