GTA 5: What Was Found in the GTA 5 Source Code: Tokyo, Midnight Club 5, and More – January 29 at 23:50, OPla G5201

On Christmas, “well-wishers” released the source code of GTA 5, revealing that a series of narrative expansions and more were planned for the game. This became possible after files from the development of “GTA 5” (about 200 GB) were purchased by a group of users for $2,000. According to some reports, one individual, who did not even contribute financially, tried to capitalize on this situation by attempting to sell the code for as much as $6,000, and for amounts ranging from $199 to $500. However, when these attempts failed, he decided that if he couldn’t profit from it, then no one would — leading the archive to be released to the public. Over a month, a lot of information was extracted, but it has been cleaned up from various public platforms at the request of the copyright holder.

  • Developers indeed had plans for Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo for the PlayStation 2 twenty years ago, and GTA: Tokyo was among the registered trademarks. Since then, rumors about Tokyo as a game world periodically resurfaced. It was even reported that a team from R* visited the city, getting acquainted with the locality and locals, taking photos, and forming an overall impression. However, the idea was postponed due to the complex system of roads, which could pose a challenge to implement. Later, it was decided that “going beyond the US” would be difficult. Obbe Vermeij, the author of a great blog about the development of those times, says that this project was not worked on at Rockstar North. It possibly existed within the New York office, but did not progress beyond the very early stages.
  • A lighting shader from Half-Life 2 was used in the RAGE engine.
  • Midnight Club 5 was being developed by the “rock stars” but was ultimately cancelled.
  • At its most active development stage, Agent was an exclusive for PS3, but it was also planned for the previous console and there’s mention of a subsequent, fourth, model, until it was completely dismantled for parts for other games.
  • The working emails of 1158 employees were exposed.
