GTA 3 Runs on Sega Dreamcast – Yesterday at 10:40 PM OPla G380

In 1999, as work on the sequel was wrapping up, several developers led by Leslie Benzies appeared in the office with a tech demo themed “Grand Theft Auto in 3D” for the Sega Dreamcast. This was not just a small city section with docks and cars—this was the first working prototype of GTA 3. They even contacted Rockstar Toronto and asked them to create something similar, but they couldn’t manage three dimensions—at best, they produced isometric (2.5D, or “pseudo-3D”). The Canadians then took on The Warriors, and as Obbe Vermeij revealed, work on the “third” on Dreamcast continued for 4 months, but then the studio switched to PlayStation 2. This shift was largely due to economic reasons rather than technical limitations. However, it remains unclear if Sega’s console could have handled the third part.

And now, 25 years later, GTA 3 has been successfully launched on the Sega Dreamcast. Not just a demo, but the final version, albeit in the form of re3. Enthusiasts like poiitidis and Frogbull55 have made significant progress over the past one and a half weeks. Compared to previous attempts, they have managed to increase the frame rate and solve the issue of overly vivid colors. Besides the clearly visible problems, there are also issues with the sound (the radio recordings heard in the video are overdubs).

However, you can not only watch but also experience it for yourself by visiting the project page on gitlab.com.
