Obsidian was unable to complete several planned features for The Outer Worlds 2. In an interview, the game director outlined which elements were left out of the role-playing game’s final release.
Veterans of Fallout: New Vegas had intended to add another faction players could join in The Outer Worlds 2 — the Protectorate. The game still contains traces indicating the team aimed to build a full faction, but development slowed: there wasn’t enough time to finish the reputation system and the questline tied to the organization.
Brandon Adler of Obsidian said that integrating the Protectorate into gameplay remains on the studio’s roadmap. The idea may be revisited in additional content or DLC for The Outer Worlds 2.
The game director also dropped a planned disguise mechanic. Early on, developers wanted players to pose as Protectorate members to mislead NPCs. The system appeared in the alpha build, but the team later determined it didn’t work well in practice and removed it from the release build.
