Will “Wood” players in League of Legends soon stop being a meme? Riot is considering a new rank
It appears that long-term residents of the Iron tier may soon be relocated to a new competitive home.
Riot Games has been closely scrutinizing the player distribution data within League of Legends’ ranked ecosystem, specifically focusing on those positioned in Iron.
As the current floor of the ranking system, Iron is typically associated with beginners. However, the data reveals a surprising reality: a substantial portion of these players are not newcomers at all, but rather seasoned veterans who have remained stuck at the bottom of the ladder for extended periods.
To better categorize this demographic, Riot Games is contemplating the introduction of a new rank situated even lower than Iron.
In a recent exchange with the community, a developer disclosed that the team is internally referring to this potential basement tier as “Wood” or “Sand.” This new division would serve as the ultimate destination for those who have hit a competitive plateau beneath the current ranking floor.
