Ahead of his highly anticipated new album, Harry Styles bypassed traditional high-fashion glossies to grace the cover of Runner’s World. In a candid feature, the global superstar reveals that few activities have been as instrumental to his mental well-being and the development of his upcoming record, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, as distance running.

In the cover story released on Tuesday, March 3, Styles reflected on how he turned to running as a sanctuary from the suffocating nature of fame. Since his meteoric rise in 2010 with One Direction, the singer admitted he spent years retreating from the world. “I reached a point where I was declining every invitation—birthdays, travel, events—just to stay protected,” he shared. Eventually, he began to question if he was staying home because he was busy, or because isolation had become his safety net. Styles noted that while closing oneself off prevents negativity, it also inadvertently blocks out life’s most fulfilling experiences.

This latest editorial comes just days before the March 6 debut of his fourth studio album. The project follows 2022’s chart-topping Harry’s House, which notably saw him partner with Better Homes & Gardens for its launch—another example of Styles’ penchant for unconventional collaborations. Speaking on his athletic pursuits, Styles highlighted a “synergy” between the physical demands of running and the “hypnotic, meditative qualities of music.”

“Being on the road allows me the clarity to process what I’m creating and navigate the complexities of my life,” he explained. Fans have long been aware of this hobby; Styles is frequently spotted jogging through the streets of London and Rome. He has also quietly completed marathons in both Tokyo and Berlin, posting impressive finishing times that cement his status as a serious athlete.

Beyond the physical benefits, running offers Styles a rare sense of anonymity. He explained to the publication that the constant movement prevents him from being swarmed. “By the time someone realizes it’s me, I’m usually already around the next corner,” he said. This ability to move through the world unseen is vital for his recovery after the high-intensity environment of touring.

With his “Together, Together” world tour set to launch this May, Styles admitted that he often grapples with existential questions while performing. “In the middle of a massive tour, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the adulation,” he confessed. “I often wonder what I’m actually contributing to the world when I’m receiving so much energy from the crowd. Running helps me ground myself and find that balance again.”
