Demi Lovato is celebrating their 29th birthday on Friday (Aug. 20) by letting go of “Melon Cake,” in the form of a new music video.

“The song is me saying goodbye to melon cake,” Lovato said in a press statement. “It was a big step for me, and I wanted to celebrate it.”

The Hannah Lux Davis-directed visual, which premiered exclusively on Facebook, opens with Lovato showing a child the delicious wonders of indulging in a real cake, which Lovato has explained in the past that they didn’t have the luxury of doing so on birthdays past.

In a March 2020 interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Lovato opened up about how the pop superstar’s previous team “controlled” their eating habits and only allowed Lovato to have sugar on their birthday in the form of a watermelon “cake” with fat-free whipped cream on top. But on Lovato’s 27th birthday, manager Scooter Braun surprised them with a real birthday cake covered in sprinkles, frosting and candles that Lovato got to enjoy with good friend Ariana Grande.

“And now I’m sayin’ no more melon cakes on birthdays/ No more barricades in doorways/ Finally get to do things my way/ La-la-la, la-la-la,” Lovato sings in the kaleidoscopic, technicolor visual.

“Melon Cake” comes from Lovato’s seventh studio album Dancing With the Devil… The Art of Starting Over, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart and No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
