Everyone wants some of Dave Grohl right now. And it would seem, Grohl is everywhere at once.
Earlier this month, Grohl and his bandmates in Foo Fighters were announced to this year’s Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. It’ll be Grohl’s second induction into the hallowed Rock Hall, after Nirvana were elevated in 2014.
The Foos’ tenth and latest studio album Medicine at Midnight dropped earlier this year, opening at No. 1 in the U.K. and Australia, and No. 3 in the U.S.
Soon after, Grohl gave us the new van-touring documentary What Drives Us, on The Coda Collection via Amazon Prime Video, and he’s behind the new Paramount+ series From Cradle to Stage, inspired by the book published by his mother, Virginia Hanlon Grohl.
As if to prove he really is everywhere, all at once, Grohl co-hosted The Tonight Show on Monday night, alongside regular top-man Jimmy Fallon.
Grohl has never been mistaken for a one-trick pony. He’s an all-rounder type who entered the Rock Hall on the first instance for his drumming, then on the second occasion for his guitarist swinging, singer/songwriter/frontman talents. For his late-night TV stint, he got multiple chances to show off his range.
There were gags aplenty when Grohl delivered a joint opening monologue. “I’m really happy to be here,” was his opening gambit. “This is one of the coolest things that I’ve done… today.” Nah, of course not, he explained. “I was in Nirvana.”
In another bit, Grohl rocked out when he was prompted to sing Foo Fighters’ “Best of You” in the style of a glitchy Rickroll meme.
Grohl also got seated for a chat about his hectic schedule and his famous friends. During recordings for What Drives Us, Grohl secured, of all things, Beatles fart stories from Ringo Starr.
The rocker also gave us some insights into his band’s work ethic. “We do have a saying in the Foo Fighters, ‘if it gets any better it’s going to get worse’. I don’t like to rehearse. Because I like to get out on stage and for it to be raw and real so it’s not like a big choreographed thing.”
But wait, there’s more. In a later sketch, Grohl goofed around with Fallon to sing old jingles in dodgy clothes and horrendous wigs. And the pair played a round of “Off Songs, Song Off,” a quiz game where the two contestants tried to guess a bunch of songs played with an unusual twist by house band The Roots.
To Grohl, most of the tunes sounded like “Back That Ass Up” by Juvenile, proving there is one thing he’s spectacularly bad at.
