Beyond the horror, Begraved incorporates “cozy” base-building elements. The hideout serves as a customizable sanctuary, featuring an interactive black cat—though the “scruff of the neck” carry mechanic has sparked some lighthearted debate among players. Future updates promise a variety of pets, cosmetics, and a nocturnal garden to tend, offering a reprieve from the dungeon crawling, similar to the tonal shifts seen in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’s Dondoko Island.
It remains a curious move for developers to launch a new studio while Valheim continues its five-year tenure in Early Access. While Begraved didn’t capture that immediate lightning-in-a-bottle hook that Valheim offered, its co-op focus suggests it may shine brightest when braving the dark with friends. If you’re looking for a fresh dungeon crawler, the demo is available now on Steam.
