Aonuma noted that the structured dungeons—a hallmark of the series prior to Breath of the Wild—were essentially born from hardware constraints. These self-contained environments were necessary to manage the console’s processing load.
“In the past, we required defined entry and exit points, which is why dungeons were essential,” he continued. “Today, these elements can be fully integrated. The freedom we enjoy now is a direct result of hardware evolution, which has had a profoundly positive impact on design. It brings us immense joy to see players experiment; we wanted to provide them with as much agency as possible.”
Nintendo certainly delivered on that promise with Tears of the Kingdom. Since its release in May 2023, the community has consistently amazed with increasingly complex and ingenious mechanical inventions. Beyond these contraptions, the game stands as a technical benchmark for what can be achieved on the Switch’s mobile architecture.
Even years into its lifecycle, Tears of the Kingdom continues to surprise with its deep, reactive systems. While Aonuma modestly credits the hardware, the game remains a testament to the development team’s ingenuity in mastering the Switch’s capabilities.
