The new season, “Eye of the Beast,” features a colossal Kraken boss with five distinct battle phases, requiring players to dodge massive tentacles that can strike multiple ships at once. “Unlike earlier sea monsters, the Kraken demands high levels of fleet coordination to defeat,” Ubisoft explained in a recent press release. It is exactly the kind of mythic naval encounter the game has needed since launch.
To help face this new threat, captains can now unlock the Corvette—marking only the game’s second large-class vessel to date. Unsurprisingly, this ship is part of the latest Smuggler’s Pass, proving that Ubisoft is doubling down on its live-service monetization model despite the industry’s changing tides.
Accompanying the update are several quality-of-life improvements, including new inventory tabs for cargo and warehouses, the ability to manage your fleet without docking, and more refined weapon ballistics. Small ships also finally receive rear-facing weaponry, providing better defensive options during pursuits.
Technically, the game’s two-year anniversary doesn’t arrive until August. In the meantime, the “Founding” event—a reprise of early content—will run through March 10 to pave the way toward summer. For a game that many expected to be dead on arrival, Year 2 is shaping up with a surprising amount of tangible content.
