Zayn Malik Reflects on Artistic Evolution and Cultural Roots Ahead of ‘Konnakol’ Release
Zayn Malik is preparing to unveil his fifth studio album, Konnakol, but in a candid conversation on the Call Her Daddy podcast, he admitted he is still humbled by the longevity of his career. Despite his global stardom, Malik confessed to being genuinely surprised that he has been able to produce five solo records since his departure from One Direction.
In an exclusive preview of the episode—which precedes the full Wednesday morning premiere—Malik discusses what he finds most rewarding about this new chapter. He noted that, above all, he is grateful that “people still care” about his musical journey.
“Five solo albums now—I was just buzzing that I got to do the first one after leaving the band, and people seemed to care,” Malik tells host Alex Cooper. “I’m really proud of the progression and just the development and understanding of myself through my music.”
Scheduled for release on April 17, Konnakol will feature 15 tracks. The rollout began in early February following the announcement of the lead single, “Die for Me,” which arrived just two days after the album news broke.
This upcoming era marks a significant milestone: a decade since Malik embarked on his solo trajectory in 2015. His debut solo effort, Mind of Mine, famously claimed the top spot on the Billboard 200, setting the stage for subsequent projects including Icarus Falls, Nobody Is Listening, and the more recent Room Under the Stairs.
Exploring Heritage Through Sound
With Konnakol, Malik intends to provide his audience with a more profound glimpse into his cultural background. The British-born musician, who is of Pakistani descent, derived the album’s title from a South Indian Carnatic music tradition. “Konnakol” refers to a sophisticated vocal percussion technique where complex rhythmic patterns are articulated through specific syllables.
In addition to the studio release, Malik is set to embark on a massive 31-date arena tour across the United Kingdom, North America, and South America. This global trek follows the conclusion of his high-profile seven-night residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas.
Malik is not the only former One Direction member currently dominating the charts. Recently, Harry Styles returned from a hiatus to secure his third No. 1 hit with “Aperture,” while Louis Tomlinson’s latest project, How Did I Get Here?, debuted at the summit of the U.K. albums chart.
The full interview, featuring more insights into Malik’s creative process and personal growth, premieres Wednesday on Call Her Daddy.
